About Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance

Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance is the marketing name for property and casualty insurance underwritten by United Farm Family Mutual Insurance Company, and life insurance provided by United Home Life Insurance Company, in Indiana. According to the company, Indiana Farm Bureau established the insurance company on October 17, 1934; it is based in Indianapolis.

A Fair Housing Center of Central Indiana analysis of 2023 Indiana Department of Insurance data ranks Indiana Farm Bureau 5th among homeowners insurers by premium (7.6%). That is a nonprofit’s analysis, not a regulator ranking.

Why Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance claims get denied or underpaid

General reasons homeowners report for denied or short-paid claims, with any carrier (not a description of Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance’s internal rules):

Hail damage called cosmetic

Dents in metal roofing, siding or gutters are sometimes treated as cosmetic, and some policies have endorsements that limit cosmetic hail damage. Check your endorsements, then document functional damage such as fractured shingle mats and granule loss.

Wind damage to siding and roofs

Lifted shingles and loose siding can let water in long after the storm. Photograph every elevation soon after the event and keep weather reports for the date.

Frozen and burst pipes

Freeze claims often turn on whether heat was maintained or the water was shut off in a vacant or seasonal home. Keep utility bills, thermostat records and the plumber’s report.

Sewer or drain backup

Water that backs up through drains or a sump pump failure is usually excluded unless you bought a water backup endorsement, often with a separate limit. Check the declarations page.

Wear and tear vs. storm damage

Older roofs are often said to have failed from age rather than wind or hail. Storm dates, photos, creased or missing shingles and nearby damage reports help show what actually happened.

Tip: Keep a claim diary

Write down every call, email and inspection with the date and the person’s name. Most state claim rules measure deadlines from notice and from proof of loss, so the dates matter.

What to do after a Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance denial or low offer

  1. 1

Get the decision and the reasons in writing

Indiana’s unfair claim settlement practices law lists failing to acknowledge and act reasonably promptly on claim communications and failing to affirm or deny coverage within a reasonable time after proof of loss statements have been completed (Ind. Code § 27-4-1-4.5). Ask for the specific policy provision the denial or reduction relies on, the adjuster’s estimate and any reports, and keep all requests in writing.

  2. 2

Read the exact policy language cited

Find the exclusion or condition the letter relies on, then read your declarations page and endorsements: deductibles, roof or cosmetic-damage terms, water damage limits and any matching or ordinance-or-law coverage.

  3. 3

    Document the damage before repairs

Photograph and video every room and roof slope, keep damaged materials or samples when you can, and save invoices for emergency repairs. That record is what a reinspection, supplement or appraisal will rely on.

  4. 4

Use the policy’s appraisal clause if the fight is about the amount

Most homeowners policies have an appraisal clause for disagreements about the amount of loss, not coverage. Read its exact steps, costs and deadlines before invoking it.

  5. 5

Check the policy’s time limit to sue

Many homeowners policies set a contractual deadline to file suit that can be shorter than you expect. Ask a Indiana-licensed attorney about legal deadlines; we are public adjusters, not attorneys.

Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance claim FAQ

Does Farm Bureau membership change how my claim is handled?

Membership is tied to buying the policy, but the claim is decided under the policy wording and Indiana law. We work only for you and can present the claim, supplement or reinspection request on your behalf.

My basement flooded in a storm. Is that covered?

It depends on how the water got in. Surface flooding is usually excluded, and sewer or sump backup is usually covered only with a water backup endorsement, often with a separate limit. Wind-driven rain through a storm-created opening is treated differently. Check the declarations page.

How long does an insurer have to decide my claim in Indiana?

Indiana doesn’t set a fixed number of days for homeowners claims. Under Ind. Code § 27-4-1-4.5, failing to act reasonably promptly on claim communications, or to affirm or deny coverage within a reasonable time after proof of loss statements are completed, is listed as an unfair claim settlement practice.

Can you guarantee the insurer will change its decision?

No. No one can honestly guarantee an outcome. We review the file, tell you what we see, and represent you if it makes sense to work together. Every claim is different, and prior results do not guarantee a similar outcome.

What does the review cost?

The claim review is free, and asking questions doesn’t hire us. If it makes sense to work together, the fee and services are explained in a written agreement before you sign.
